Abstract
Internet enables peoples to be a part of information society. Internet has characteristics e.g., digital, convergence, manipulable, networkable, demassification. It gives disruption towards existence of print media. The effect is illustrated by metaphor of "nightfall" to describe its decline. This paper will discuss (1) the development of information technology (internet) and its characteristics; 2) the impact towards the print media existence. We deal with that the internet gives an effect to the mass media so that they turn into private or narrowcasting, instead of broadcasting. The presence of technology of reading-media in the internet, such as www, programming language, content management system, and free software / open source etc empowers internet’s users. Actually, print media get advantages from the internet e.g. efficiency and effectiveness in news production. On the other hand, it provides a challenge, that is: how mass media exist in the global trend of increasing use of online media and vice-versa. Regarding public policy, we suggest that (1) the growth of online media usage should be redressed by measures to anticipate and handle cyber-crime and privacy issues; (2) the development of online media should be in line with the development goals.
Keywords: disruptive, internet technologu, print media.
